Matching accuracy

What merging is

The same clinic, café or service station usually has a listing on Yandex Maps, on Google Maps and on 2GIS. Pinsonar collects all three and decides which listings belong to one business, so that you see one record with the ratings and prices of each map. We call this decision merging.

There are two ways to get it wrong:

  • A false merge: two different businesses become one record. Their ratings, reviews and prices are mixed. This is the dangerous error, and the matcher is tuned to avoid it first.
  • A missed merge: one business stays as two records. Nothing is mixed; you just see it twice, or a map is missing from its card.

How we measure it

We keep a test set of real cases: pairs of listings that were met during collection, each with its answer, "same business" or "different businesses". Every change of the matching code is replayed on the whole set before it is released, and the release is stopped if a known different pair gets merged.

The set today:

Cases
All recorded cases613
With a known answer597
Same business521
Different businesses76
Answer checked by a person357
Answer from an earlier automatic merge, not rechecked200
Constructed cases (branches of one chain in different buildings)40
Without an answer yet (not counted)16

The numbers

Replayed on 2026-10-26 with the current code:

  • False merges: 0. Precision 100%: of all the pairs the matcher merged, this share is really one business.
  • Recall 94.2%: of all the true pairs, this share the matcher merges by itself. On the pairs whose answer a person checked it is 91.6%; the difference comes from the earlier automatic answers, which are easy cases by nature.
  • Missed merges: 30. Most are listings without a street address or with a long tail in the name. They stay separate until someone links them.

These numbers are produced by a script from the test set and copied to this page automatically when the site is built; a check fails if the set changes and the page does not.

What the numbers do not promise

  • The test set is not the whole database. It holds the cases we met and checked, mostly dental clinics in Moscow and the Moscow region. Other niches, cities and countries may behave differently.
  • Precision is measured on known pairs. It is a strong sign, not a guarantee for every listing on the map.
  • Borderline pairs are not merged automatically: they go to moderation, where a person decides. Until then the business is shown as separate records.
  • The data of the maps can itself be wrong (an old address, a moved business). Merging does not fix the maps.

If you see two different businesses in one record, or one business twice, write to hello@pinsonar.com with the names and the area: the case goes into the test set.

Questions and answers

Does 0 false merges mean Pinsonar never merges two different places?

No. It means none of the 76 known different pairs in the test set is merged by the current code. A new kind of case in a city we have not seen yet can still go wrong; when we find one, it goes into the set before the code is changed.

What happens to a pair the matcher is not sure about?

It is not merged. Borderline pairs wait for a person to decide, so a doubt costs completeness, not a mix-up of two businesses.
